Phyllis Curott
Wicce, Author, Attorney & Founder and Elder Priestess of the Temple of Ara

Phyllis Curott, JD, is a spiritual pioneer. She is one of America’s first public witches (wicce, wise one, seer of the sacred) whose courageous advocacy and teaching have helped this reborn Euro-Indigenous wisdom become the fastest-growing spirituality in America. More than 40 years ago, she was initiated and trained as a Wiccan priestess and simultaneously worked with the Brooklyn Drumming Group, the first drumming circle based on the work of Dr. Michael Harner.

Phyllis recognized the interconnected history and importance of these lost wisdom traditions, especially for women and for Mother Earth, and refused to be stereotyped. She exploded out of the broom closet, becoming an outspoken teacher and advocate in the global media. As an attorney, her groundbreaking legal cases secured fundamental rights for witches.

New York Magazine called her teaching the culture’s “next big idea” and Time Magazine published her as one of “America’s leading thinkers.” Her bestselling memoir, Book of Shadowsintroduced the world to the magic of the Goddess and the ancestral wisdom of Witchcraft.  She has since become the world's most widely published Wiccan, with her book translated into 13 languages, including Russian, Chinese, and Turkish. Her online Youtube series, What is Wicca? has more than 3 million views.

Phyllis has received numerous honors, including induction into the Martin Luther King Jr. Collegium of Clergy & Scholars, Jane magazine’s Ten Gutsiest Women of the Year, One Spirit Seminary’s 2018 Service to Humanity Awardand Kindred Spirit’s 2020 Person of the Year Award. Phyllis is also a trustee of the Parliament of the World’s Religions, and was program chair for the 2023 Parliament, and chair of the PoWR Women's Task Force.

Her most recent projects include The Witches’ Wisdom Tarot,  a profoundly compassionate and sensitively accurate oracle created by journeying, and rooted in the spiritual power of the natural world. Her most recent book, Spells for Living Well: A Witch's Guide to Manifesting Change, Well-being, and Wonder, teaches people how to cast spells as a creative, joyful, empowering, spiritual practice. Phyllis continues to write and teach about Nature’s spiritual wisdom and magic, why the world needs her witches, and witches need skills.
